Question:
How important is soccer football to you? Do you like it? Is the Worldcup more important than the Superbowl or the World Series or any other major sport championship in your own country? Are you planning to watch 2010 Worldcup matches on TV next year?

England have been drawn into World Cup 2010 Group C, along with Algeria, Slovenia and USA. With Italian coach Fabio Capello at the helm, the blind and misguided arrogance of tournaments past seems to have morphed into a more appropriate and more likeable level of quiet confidence. Unless Wayne Rooney gets injured. Then it’s back to panic and patriotism.
You already know about the coach and the key players, but read on to see who has the best name, nickname and YouTube video.
Nickname: Three Lions. See above.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hallo to your official song of World Cup 2010. It’s co-written and performed by Shakira (she of the famously honest pelvic region) and is called “Wake Waka (This Time for Africa)”.
I mostly share the concerns about this song expressed by Taylor on the USA blog earlier today, in that I much prefer K’naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” song and am not too happy that the opening line of the official World Cup song is going to be “You’re a good soldier”. Not a good message.
I’ve nothing against Shakira. But does it seem odd to anyone else…

The USA has a complicated history with jerseys. Unlike other teams, they’ve never 100% settled on a definitive style, arguably to the detriment of the team’s identity.
For example, Argentina has stuck with sky blue and white stripes. Italy doesn’t deviate from blue. Brazil has been canary yellow ever since 1950. But USA jerseys have switched both colour and pattern a few times over the years. Usually a mix of either red, white or blue, but let’s not forget the incredible(y bad?) denim and stars home shirt from 1994.
Read on for a review of the USA’s home and away…

No matter how many times he watched the play, Kevin Payne still couldn’t believe it.
After D.C. United’s 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew in Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup semifinal , the United president wasn’t watching the 89th minute own goal by Marc Burch that forced extra time when United was just moments away from securing passage to its third straight final.
He wasn’t watching the golden opportunity Andy Najar had to win the game moments later, when the rookie snuck behind the Crew defense and went in on goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum all by his lonesome before touching his shot…

Sometimes, life just isn’t fair. Imagine for a moment that you are Liechtenstein. You’re all revved up for your first Euro 2012 qualifying match, and feeling confident. Sure, you’ve taken some beatings, but remember – in the Euro 2008 qualifiers, you beat both Latvia and Iceland. Not too shabby for a little guy. Then you look at your first opponent, and it’s World Cup champions Spain. That has to take a little wind out of your sails.
Or imagine for a moment you are the Most Serene Republic of San Marino. Due to your tiny size and ridiculously non-threatening name,…

My report for AFP on France’s shock 1-0 defeat at home to Belarus in their opening Euro 2012 qualifying match can be found here.

On this week’s Talking Bull, Matt and Ben look back at the Red Bulls’ victories over TFC and San Jose and preview this weekend’s big contest against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto. They also discuss the retirement of MetroStars/Red Bulls fan favorite Mike Petke.
Euro 2012 qualifying is back upon us, with Yossi Benayoun protesting the move to Israel’s holy Sabbath with an aggressive hat-trick against Malta. This comes after qualifying was initially kicked off back in August as any major tournament should: with Estonia and the Faroe Islands. (The Faroes sadly fell.)
Tomorrow, however, is the big opening and we have the scoop below.
Five Games To Watch
Liechtenstein v Spain: The defending world and European champions are getting proper world and European defending champion treatment.
Pray for Liechtenstein.
Belgium v Germany: The Belgians form one of the most intriguing teams in…

The Vancouver Sun is reporting that the Vancouver Whitecaps, who join MLS as an expansion team in 2011, will name current head coach Teitur Thordarson as head coach of the expansion side.
Thordarson joined Vancouver in 2007, leading Vancouver to the USL-1 league championship in his first season with the club. Thordarson was able to get Vancouver back into the league final the following year and currently has Vancouver top of the league with a 9-3-13 record.
The 58-year-old ex-Icelandic international has been heavily involved in recruitment of new players for Vancouver’s 2011 MLS roster, already signing Swiss internationals…

Everyone anticipated that the World Cup would be a distraction, but the size of the distraction was vastly underestimated, and as a result online poker sites have seen their profits plummet.
Can we not all agree that online poker is the “distraction” and not the other way ’round? Poker’s nice and all, surely, but the World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the land – it deserves its due respect. Or else…
And maybe that’s why it took online poker down for the month of June.
One of the big ones didn’t anticipate…

Right-footed, left-sided attackers are currently one of football’s most fashionable commodities (think David Villa and Robinho at the World Cup; Franck Ribéry at Bayern Munich; Nani at Manchester United), and like any self-respecting wealthy Italian man, Silvio Berlusconi has to be up with the latest trends. So he bought two. But while Robinho is hoping his transfer deadline day move to Milan will allow him to re-launch his stuttering club career, his arrival at San Siro may well turn out to be bad news for Ronaldinho.
Berlusconi might be the most ardent Ronaldinho fan on the planet, but he seems…

The Philadelphia Union announced the signing of defender/midfielder Sheanon Williams today. The 20 year old has represented the United States at both the U-17 and U-20 level. He spent this season playing for the Union’s USL-2 partner club Harrisburg City Islanders, where he scored 3 goals in 19 games. In 2007 he played for current Union assistant coach John Hackworth at the U-17 World Cup in Korea. The terms of the contract were not disclosed per Major League Soccer policy.
Though it may seem an occasion long since gone, yesterday brought forth a significant obit: the only player still remaining from the first World Cup final in 1930. Argentine Francisco Varallo passed away at the ripe young age of 100.
That first World Cup final was more than 80 years ago, and 75 or so before the advent of YouTube. But through the miracle of technology and someone falling asleep in FIFA’s intellectual copyright division, we can get a grainy glimpse at the game, long before most of us were alive.
And we’re only a few years…
